The Centre for Accounting and Society (CAS) recently hosted a visiting PhD student (Sarah Maire, University of Lorraine, France).

Following my first visit in November-December 2016, Professor Paolo Quattrone was happy to host me again in 2017 and supervised a second visit to the University of Edinburgh Business School. This experience enriched my work on institutional logics, especially concerning their visual representation, thanks to the multidisciplinary research held at the Business School.

During my visit, I delivered a presentation during a Brown Bag seminar on a working paper. The paper is titled “Visual analysis and institutional complexity: When Scouts and annual calendars allow us to view logics”. Behind the warm welcome, I received plenty of relevant and accurate questions and insights. They allowed me to improve my work before finalising it.

Moreover, I also had the opportunity to attend presentations from relevant Business School academics at their academic seminar series as well as several PhD annual reviews and discussions. After contacting Professor Candace Jones and Professor Ingrid Jeacle, I was able to have personal work sessions with them to discuss my research. They gave me very useful insights on it.

Two collaborations with other PhD in Accounting students also emerged during the exchanges, including plans to host an informal collaboration and a public engagement event. I had several exchanges with other PhD students concerning the methodology I have used and the visual content analysis approaches. We tested its ability and limitations on different data and discussed how to highlight its results.

The trip was very beneficial and a great opportunity.
